Mária Prokopp, the eminent ordinary professor of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, celebrated her seventieth birthday in March 2009. It was for this occasion that her pupils in Budapest published the above Festschrift. Professor Prokopp is one of the most famous scholars researching wall paintings in Italy and Central-Europe in the 13–15th centuries. She is doubtlessly one of the most distinguished interpreters of the European cult and artistic representations of the saints of the Árpád Dynasty. Professor Prokopp’s interests in her early years lay in the 14th-century frescoes of the chapels of the Esztergom castle, which later led to a particular interest in fresco painting during the 14–15th centuries in Hungary. The essays collected here reflect these and kindred topics, with about ten essayists seeking to add to this body of knowledge. The remaining sixty contributors chose to deal with medieval, early modern and modern history, history of art, of literature and of music. There are twenty-two papers on medieval art and architecture, three referring to the Renaissance, nine to the Baroque, sixteen to art in the 19th and 20th centuries, and twelve to related disciplines.

This work pays an honour, well due, to the pioneer work of Professor Prokopp in medieval wall painting. The contributions cover 444 pages written in English, French, Italian and Hungarian, and are illustrated with some 240 figures. The seventy contributions are divided into seven sections: congratulatory writings, essays on antique and medieval art, renaissance art, baroque art, art in the 19th and 20th centuries, essays on related disciplines, and essays. As expected, the majority of names in the table of contents indicate almost exclusively Hungarian scholars. Still, authors from Florence and Košice are also represented in the collection. The essays themselves are so varied that a detailed review is not possible, but among those of the broadest appeal may be mentioned a study of a Roman Tombstone in the Košice Lapidarium (Martin Pristáš), an exposition of the reuse and the imitation of Roman steles in medieval churches in northern Italy and Austria (Guido Tigler), an essay about the fortune of the Byzantine staurotheque of Esztergom (György Ruzsa) and a writing on the bell foundry workshop of the so-called Gaal family in the Spiš region (Juraj Gembický). The paper by Kristína Markušová of the Košice Office of Cultural Heritage consists of an excellent discussion on the restoration of St. Michael’s Chapel in Košice. One of the essays of special interest describes the results of recent restoration of the Last Judgement Mosaic of the Prague Cathedral (Eve Borsook).

Mária Prokopp is undoubtedly one of the scientists who and whose work offer exemplary guidance to fellow researchers. Her Festschrift paints a vast picture of her service and influence. Her research is solid and respected, and she has become a leading authority in late medieval fresco painting despite continuing to undertake full-time teaching. Contributros of the Festschrift refer again and again with enthusiasm to her excellence in teaching and to her warm personality. The Festschrift itself is a valuable work in art history, and a splendid example of the international appeal and influence of science. It shows that art history develops along different disciplines, and displays the many sided aspects of this kind of research; aspects to which Professor Prokopp herself has contributed so much. The book concludes with lists of the publications of Professor Prokopp and of the authors of the volume. Every scholar shall find in this volume numerous articles of interest and value, making this book a worthy tribute to the woman who put Hungary on the map of the science and research of wall painting.

I saggi qui raccolti riflettono questi argomenti e altri temi a essi relativi.
